Jeffrey Dahmer: To the Bone

I've decided to write a series of astrological articles on serial killers for my next book, an updated version of "Growing Pains". Why? Because serial killers are the worst examples of human beings. So far I've taken on John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, David Long and Aileen Wuornos. And although I'm not even halfway through my "hit list" I've come to the conclusion that not only do the astrology stories of these people ring true but that had they been given the appropriate intervention at the crucial times, many lives could have been saved. I am finding this stage of my work quite difficult not because of the gruesomeness of it but because of the frustration I feel when I see failures in pastoral care.  And I am not blaming the teachers because I know what a hard job it is. I know that many teachers take their jobs very seriously and I know that many teachers would do so much more if the educational system wasn't geared towards exploiting good hearted people who want to make the world a better place.

How can society continue to mistreat teachers and social workers before someone important gets it that investing in paying more people to do these important jobs is the only way to stop a child growing up to be a criminal? And while I'm at. . .when will someone important realise that astrology can be far more useful than just star sign columns?

So today I'm taking on Jeffrey Dahmer, quite possibly the most notorious cannibalistic serial killer in history. Could astrology have saved him?

Jeffrey Dahmer was born on 21 May 1960 at 16:34 in Milwaukee Wisconsin (Rodden Rating: AA; Collector: Przybylowski) with both Jupiter and Saturn in Capricorn.

Capricorn, ruled by Saturn is concerned with structure so perhaps it is unsurprising he would come to have a fascination with bones (which are Saturn ruled). The stellium of planets in the sign of Gemini in the 8th house is also suitable for a serial killer who was obsessed with consuming his victims so they could become a part of him and keeping their acid-stripped bones as trophies.

Jeffrey's Moon is also significant as it is angular and in Aries, ruled by Mars. Mars is in its dignity in Aries and whilst this alone cannot account for Jeffrey's actions, it does help shed some light on how he could carry out such gruesome murders without too much thought on the lack of morality or the agony he inflicted on his victims and their families.

Although he was doted upon as an infant, Jeffrey's mother was known to be "tense, greedy for attention and argumentative, " according to Wikipedia. It is telling that Jeffrey first became interested in bones around the time of Jupiter's transits to the natal planets in Gemini. His father was an academic and was working on his degree in Chemistry in Jeffrey's early childhood. It is not difficult to imagine that his father would have encouraged Jeffrey's interest in how living things function and how their bones fit together. And it makes perfect astrological sense that this early curiosity would grow to be an all consuming (as it were) obsession.

Jeffrey would have just entered first grade in September 1966 and the family moved to Ohio that October. By this time his mother, who had been confined to bed owing to a prescription addiction, was pregnant with her second child. Jeffrey remembers this stage of his childhood as being very tense and a teacher noted on his first grade report card that she thought he was reserved and was concerned he was neglected (who was in charge of following this up??). Quite possibly the only attention he received, with so much going on in the family, is when he showed an interested in a very elementary form of taxidermy.

In 1968, as transit Saturn hovered around his natal Moon and descendant, he asked his father how to bleach animal bones. The father was said to be delighted that his lethargic son was taking an interest in what he saw as scientific curiosity and taught him how to preserve bones and how to be safe round chemicals. Father apparently didn't think it was odd for a child to be so interested in dead animals. With three planets in the house of death, an astrologer might not think it would be such a great idea to encourage such a curiosity--or if it was to be encouraged, it would have needed a very clear direction.

Jeffrey would have entered high school in September 1974 with Saturn transiting his MC and opposing its natal position. It was noted that he had quite a serious alcohol problem as a 14 year old.  As I keep saying, the habits of a life time are formed between the first Jupiter return and the first Saturn opposition. He was known to smuggle alcohol in his jacket, store it in his locker and even openly drink it in class.

Who on earth was in charge of pastoral care at that school??

From early adolescence, Jeffrey knew he was homosexual. By the time transit Saturn was conjunct his natal Uranus in 1976, he was a well established class clown and was known for playing pranks that involved pretending to have seizures and knocking things around. and his parents were having severe arguments. At 16, he made plans to attack an attractive man, knock him unconscious with a baseball bat and sexually assault him. By this time, his grades plummeted owing to his alcohol problem.

His father moved out of the house in 1977 and shortly after graduation, Jeffrey committed his first murder as transiting Saturn made contact to his natal Pluto. He dissected his victim's body, buried it and then unearthed it to pare the flesh from the bones.

After a few very unproductive few years, a stint in the army and a move to his grandmother's house (she was the only person to whom he showed any affection), he found employment at a chocolate factory and worked the nightshift. By this time transiting Saturn was opposing his natal planets in Gemini and Neptune was transiting his natal Jupiter. Jeffrey was picking up men for sexual encounters but didn't like it that they moved. So around this time he came up with the idea of drugging  his sexual companions so he could have sex with their motionless bodies.

Two years later, as Jupiter was transiting his descendant and natal Moon, Jeffrey committed his second murder and dismember the corpse as before--at his grandmother's house.

By April 1988, he was actively seeking victims as Saturn transited his natal Jupiter. For his Saturn return, he killed another man but this time preserved the victim's head and genitals. He continued with his killing spree, following a similar pattern of killing until his arrest on 22 July 1991 as Jupiter transited his natal Uranus.

Despite his horrific crimes, Jeffrey was declared to be sane and was described in very kind terms by a clinical psychologist as "Amiable, pleasant to be with, courteous, with a sense of humor, conventionally handsome, and charming in manner. He was, and still is, a bright young man." Gotta love a man with a stellium in Gemini I guess.

As Saturn transited his natal Chiron and Chiron transited his natal North Node, he was attacked and killed in prison.

Aileen Wuornos: An Unlovable Life

Aileen Wuornos was born on 29 February 1956 (time unknown) in Rochester Michigan with Jupiter in Leo and Saturn in Sagittarius.

Aileen's tawdry life is striking for the sympathy it has garnered in the aftermath of her execution on 9 October 2002. She has had four documentaries, a major film ("Monster" starring an unrecognisable Charlize Theron--who won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal), a couple of more minor films, an opera, a few books as well as several songs written as tributes to her.

Either you can look at her life and take it that everyone is fascinated by a female serial killer or you can set that aside and have a look at the astrology behind it all. Or you can be like me and get more determined to ensure children--and the damaged adults they become--get help when they need it.

Let's start with her Jupiter in Leo. As I wrote in "Growing Pains":

"These learners will not like situations where they might be presented in the worst light, but give them the opportunity to shine in the spotlight and you’ll never get them off the stage. In group work, the competition to be king of the classroom is high. Take advantage of this, but be prepared for the tears of the losers. This group will need to learn the value of sharing, equality and working together. "

Aileen's Jupiter in Leo is conjunct Pluto by only a few degrees. Conjunctions (as well as other aspects), "carry the energy" of the aspect as it transits.  This is some intense and powerful energy that is triggered off with every Jupiter transit.

Sadly, Aileen was abandoned by her mother as Jupiter transited her Saturn in Sagittarius. Although Aileen may not have been able to say it at the time, such an action by one's own mother is an embarrassment for a child with Jupiter in Leo, who has issues around accepting they are not really born of royalty. This was a child who wanted to be greater than her circumstances would allow. Aileen and her brother were adopted by their grandparents and Aileen claimed her grandfather had beaten her and sexually assaulted her.

Sadly, I have worked with children who have been abused by those who are supposed to be looking after them. In my experience, these children are far too knowledgeable about sex far too early. They stand out like sore thumbs in the things they say and do. Over sexualised behaviour is one of the many things teachers are supposed to look out for when they are teaching a class of 30 pupils, dancing to the tune of Ofsted, marking their books and dealing with irate parents who treat them like cheap babysitters. In other words, Aileen's teachers may have noticed something was amiss but did nothing about it. Perhaps they had too many other things to do and simply didn't want to be involved.

Her protection ignored, Aileen began engaging in sexual activities in exchange for food, drugs and cigarettes around the time of her first Jupiter return at 11. Again, I have to wonder what kind of school she attended that the other children did not gossip about this--particularly a class of Jupiter in Leo learners who will do anything to get attention from anyone. Including disclosing secrets about what the other children are getting up to.

Add to the mix that her father was imprisoned at the time of her birth (she never met him). He had been convicted of sexual crimes against children and committed suicide just before her 13th birthday. Transiting Jupiter was conjunct her natal Neptune when she was raped by one of her grandfather's friends mid 1970. She gave birth to a son on 23 March 1971who was placed up for adoption as Jupiter and Neptune both transited her natal Saturn and Saturn opposed its own natal position. History was repeating itself: Aileen's mother had abandoned her one Jupiter cycle before.

Unbelievably, I have read accounts that seem far too keen at placing blame on Aileen's shoulders for her own sexual abuse and rape as a child. Anyone who knows anything about rape understands that it is not a sexual crime but one of power and control. It is meant to humiliate--and then use that humiliation to ensure the victim is unable to speak through embarrassment. There is a total loss of dignity in being raped. For a Jupiter in Leo child--one who has such immeasurable pride--to disclose such abuse goes a long way to demonstrate the trauma. I don't buy it that Aileen was attention seeking, lying or whatever excuses anyone wants to make for a society or justice system that can 1) ignore a child in danger or 2) blame a child for their own sexual assault. It makes me sad and angry that in modern times, we still expect children to have the ability to "grow out it" when they don't have the slightest clue of how to do this one their own.

Aileen dropped out of school after the birth of her child and after her grandfather kicked her out of the house when her grandmother died (of liver failure), she began working as a prostitute--during the time of her Saturn opposition. This is an intelligent girl who should have been encouraged to stay in school.

Jupiter and Chiron transited her natal Venus when the very attractive Aileen married a yacht club president in 1976. Saturn had transited her Uranus and Neptune was on her N Node. That same year she was in and out of trouble for drinking offences. In August that year, she inherited $10,000 when her brother died of cancer.  In a few months time, transit Jupiter in Taurus would square its natal position along with Pluto.

The planet Jupiter in Leo is flashy and wants to be admired. To have Jupiter in Leo is to be big hearted and easily hurt by rejection. At its second waning square, the young Jupiter in Leo adult wants to buy the things they think will make other people look at them and go: "By God, there goes the Queen". And an ego as damaged as Aileen's has even more to prove. She bought a new car (along with other luxuries) with her inheritance and then promptly crashed it.

I read Aileen's life events after this and I just can't help but think of her wounded pride. I don't have too many doubts she drank and took drugs and stole to pay for the drink and drugs because she could not cope with the humiliation of being unlovable.

We know the rest of the story because of the movie "Monster". She hooked up with a gay lover around the time of her first Saturn return in 1986. Remember natal Saturn had been transited by other planets when she was abandoned and had given birth. There is loss and sadness attached to Saturn but for a well balanced personality, there is potential. For someone as badly damaged as Aileen, there can only be tragedy: early Jupiter and Saturn transits provide the foundation. If the foundation is unstable, eventually the whole structure collapses.

Transit Jupiter and Saturn/Neptune were in opposition with the probability that her progressed Moon was affected when she starting her killing spree. I have not done enough research into whether or not there is a difference between male and female serial killers but one might assume it would be more likely that a woman's progressed moon would be implicated in major life events.

In her one year crime spree, Jupiter had passed over her natal Uranus and transit Saturn was in opposition to these planets when she was arrested. Her lover was guaranteed immunity if she could procure a confession from Aileen.  A damaged Jupiter in Leo is only too happy to boast.

Aileen Wuornos was executed by lethal injection almost an exact Jupiter cycle later on 9 October 2002 as Pluto, in natal conjunction with Jupiter, transited her north node. "Monster" was made as Jupiter transited its natal position the following year.

Amazingly, Charlize Theron had her Jupiter conjunct Aileens' natal Venus and her Neptune on Aileen's natal North Node. Her portrayal of a serial killer not only earned her an Oscar, it brought compassion to the life of a woman who had come to believe herself to be unlovable.

The Demons of David Long

"I was in the reformatory school and penitentiary but they create monsters in there."

--David Long's final words before he was executed by lethal injection on 8 December 1999

Long was arrested for a triple murder in 1986. He had attacked three woman from the same household with a foot long hatchet, then confessed to two other violent murders.  He described his act as "Satanic".

Born on 15 July 1953, near San Angelo Texas, with no known birth time, Long's chart poses a particular problem for astrologers who just can't work without the angles, an exact location for birth or other factors dependent on a AA Rodden Rating. This is the beauty of working with Jupiter and Saturn: their orbits around us are so slow that a day in the life of a mere human makes little difference. So let's look at the information we do have from a noon chart.

Long's Jupiter was in Gemini, ruled by Mercury in Leo. Of this, I've written in "Growing Pains": "These learners never tire of being admired for their quick wit, passion and eloquence. Unfortunately they seldom give others a chance to speak. For teachers, circle time can become a three-ringed circus with pupils all vying for attention as if no-one had ever noticed them before. They must be taught to take their turn." A Jupiter in Gemini is a quick mind that needs encouragement to look beneath the surface. They can feel overwhelmed with the sheer volume of information out there and a class of these learners tend to polarise into the razor sharps who dominate lessons with their banter and those who are terrified of looking stupid. Long, with Mercury in Leo, would have been particularly affected by this fear and so may have resorted to other means of gaining attention. At his Jupiter returns, these feelings of inferiority may have been ignited--particularly as Venus, the ruler of his Saturn is implicated in every Jupiter transit because of it's proximity to Jupiter.

Long's Saturn was in Libra, ruled by Venus in Gemini. Of this, I've written in "Growing Pains": "These pupils attract those who stimulate their minds. They need to know trivial details and will gossip forever if they are allowed. They need to know that they will learn lots about different types of subjects. Teachers and other authority gures can facilitate this process by showing them an overview of a course and helping them see what they will learn." Saturn in Libra children are fascinated with relationships of all kinds. They need to be in a relationship to understand themselves. I also wrote: When they were about seven (at the first Saturn square), they may have heard about an elderly aunt who was dead for two years before someone found her, or it might have been that their mother was so pre-occupied with her job that they felt neglected, or perhaps there was some cataclysmic crack in the family structure that the parents split up."  In Long's case, his mother became ill and subsequently died a few years later, as Uranus and Pluto were both transiting his Moon (Long's natal Moon would have been in Virgo between 8 and 22 degrees). Long's sister (who was a Saturn square older than her brother) testified that following the death of their mother, the children were left in the care of their alcoholic father who neglected them, over disciplined them and on at least one occasion brought home a woman from a bar and had sex with her front of them. The sister went on to testify that her brother had changed after the death of his mother and ended up in reform school just after his first Jupiter return at the age of 12. She, along with another brother, also testified that Long had a long history of substance abuse (which began during his Jupiter return) and mental health problems: all things that should have been addressed by a responsible adult who should have taken an interest in this child.

Children who fall between the cracks, as Long had so clearly done, try to build their house on a wonky foundation. Adding to the problem is having Mercury in Leo which may have meant Long was too ashamed to ask for help himself. To admit to being wrong would have caused him deep humiliation which a fragile ego simply can not cope with. As Long himself pointed out in his final words, an institution like a reform school is not a place to get help but a place where monsters are created. So small wonder he ended up in prison.

Additionally, Long had a stellium of planets, Sun, Mars and Uranus, in Cancer square to Saturn conjunct Neptune. Neptune dissolves Saturn's boundaries and it must be used in non destructive way--for example music is a good way to use this conjunction. Astrology always shows a better alternative.

Before going in to the next phase of Long's life, I just want to address a very big problem in our society and that is the fact that tons of money is channelled into our entertainment industry (such as paying sports and film stars ridiculously large amounts of money for very little work) but we'll skimp on education and over work teachers and social workers to the point where they are driven to apathy. Then we'll complain about how expensive prisons are and blame the educational and social services systems for not doing something to help children avoid a life of crime. And of course, I have a lot to say about how astrology could work with teachers, social workers and probation officers to help people correct their wonky foundations and become productive citizens. But I can't do this on my own.

In late 1978, Long beat a man to death with a tyre iron. The murder remained unsolved. The transits for this day show that Jupiter was transiting its ruler, Mercury in Leo and Saturn was transiting his natal Moon, the point where Uranus and Pluto had transited when his mother died.  In his confession, Long had said he felt his victim was treating him as if he were stupid. Five years later when he committed another murder--this time one involving fire--Mars was transiting the stellium of natal planets squaring his Saturn/Neptune conjunction and his North Node was conjunct his natal Jupiter. He said he snapped because he held a grudge against then man and had been on heroin binge.

Three years later, Long met a woman and was staying with her, her blind cousin and a friend. Long had been drinking heavily which was causing friction. Long says that smell of the dogs that lived at the house reminded him of his dying mother.  This time, transit Jupiter opposed his natal Moon (the one that had been transited by Uranus /Pluto when his mother died) and transiting Saturn opposed its natal ruler, Venus. He had attacked all three from behind with a foot long hatchet. He was arrested for driving whilst intoxicated and confessed to the murders.

Long remained on death row for over a decade. As the date of his execution approached, as transit Neptune was conjunct his natal North Node, he took an overdose. After a wave of protest, the state of Texas decided they really would remove a man from intensive care to the executioner rather than stay the execution. In the weeks leading up to his execution, transiting Jupiter had been in opposition to Saturn/Neptune.
